Writing: A Crucial Life Skill

How is your writing going on?

Writing is the most vital skill required in life. It helps us communicate our feelings through written words, helps us perform better in academia, and simply allows us to become creative and makes us feel less lonely. Although it may appear at first that the people who have the most to benefit from writing are writers, managers, businessmen, journalists, or keynote speakers, that cannot be further from the truth. Every one of us can take away something from developing and honing our writing skills, even if it’s just a simple practice of keeping a journal.

Although the majority of that interaction is carried out verbally or nonverbally, a great deal of communication requires us to write. Different social network sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram all require us to write and our work also mostly revolves around writing. This also includes text messages we send each other using our smartphones through the sites mentioned above. To help you as a new writer, here are strong writing tips you can adopt in your writing process to help you become a better writer.

Improving Your Writing Skills

  • Create an outline

Firstly, you need to identify the topic of your writing. After fixing a proper topic, keep in mind what are the major questions you have to answer in your writing. Questions like “what is this written piece trying to convey?”, “will it serve the main purpose of what I’m writing?” are crucial to answer. Those answers should link back to your topic and your main thesis statement. That way, your writing will also be cohesive and it links back to your main theme making it a perfect piece and making your readers understand what you’re trying to deliver.

  • Researching

Having preliminary research is very important because it determines whether there is enough information out there for your needs and it also helps you set a context for your research. Looking up for keywords for your writings in several dictionaries, thesaurus, taking up library references is also another crucial part. For additional background research on your topic or for your writing, several pieces of information can be found in your notebooks, textbooks, essays, theories, and many others. But again, you need to keep in mind that you have to focus on your topic in light of your research and gain all the resources available to you.

  • Structure your writing

The key aspect of structuring your work effectively involves focusing your ideas before you begin. By outlining in note form what you want to cover, you may be more able to link areas and similar thoughts together and then organize a basic structure for your writing. But it highly depends on what it is about. If you are writing about a fictional world, then perhaps it is essential to frame it freely and without following a proper structure. But still, the main theme that you are trying to convey should be covered. If you are writing an assignment, then maybe you need to follow the five-paragraph rule or a basic rule of writing an introduction, body, and conclusion. If you are writing a paper for an organization, it’s important to note things down in a bullet point. That way, people will find it easier to read and you can also include any bar/graphs or numbers later on. Thus, these structures depend on how you want to persuade your readers and what you want to present.

  • Choose simple words and sentences

Using unique rhetoric while writing is important and it makes your writings look fantastic as well. But understanding your audiences and readers is equally important as well. If your readers are beginners or are not good with vocabularies, then it’s necessary to use words and sentences that are simple so that you will gain more readers of that caliber and your writing will also flourish among that group of people. But if you are writing for a larger audience that includes both beginners and advanced readers or writers, it is important to use unique vocabulary since it persuades the readers to understand what is written, it makes them learn new words and like your writing even more. In the future, you will also gain more audiences and have a larger attraction because of your writing.

  • Get feedback on your writings

Firstly, to get the feedback you need to understand that it is for your benefit and you also need to understand that feedback can be both harmful and decent. For any kind of feedback, you need to be accepting of all the constructive criticisms because no matter how bad it is, it does not mean you have failed in life. It means you are serious about writing something good and intelligible. You also need to choose people who read or write fantastically for better feedback. If you do not know people who write or many writers, there are always online and offline workshops going on. An online community where you can exchange ideas and feedback is always important. Considering everyone’s opinions is also the best way. While it is not good to consider everyone’s criticisms, it is best to consider what they say about your writing.

  • Practice writing every day

It is always true that the more writings you practice, the more you hone the skill in your everyday life. This means if you practice writing every day, you will become the best writer. Because the more you write, the more your writing skills improve. And the skills are very beneficial for you to understand yourself, the way you write, the way you present your characters, or all the stakeholders in your writing. Practicing thoroughly also makes you confident in your writing abilities makes you feel less inferior than everyone else. You start bringing more clarity in your work and people will start liking that even more. Your mental, physical, and emotional state also become stable.

Thus, writing has several benefits as it provides you with all the materials such as communication skills and many others. Writing helps you clear your mind and helps you perform better in your everyday life.
