Building Emotional Intelligence!

How many times have you heard or even come across the term emotional intelligence?

Building emotional intelligence develops a strong sense of self-esteem and social confidence, also guides you in ways to take charge of your emotions, and improve your social skills.

What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional intelligence (EI), also known as Emotional Quotient (EQ), is the ability to sense, control, understand, and regulate your own and others’ emotions in order to establish strong and healthy connections in your professional and personal life.

Workplaces, universities, and schools admire candidates with higher Intelligence Quotients (IQ) believing that those with a higher IQ performs better and surpass all their peers in education or the tasks set. People with high Emotional Quotient (EQ) is more appreciated than someone with a higher IQ. Those with high EQ are better able to understand the place they work at, the people around them, recognize how emotions can affect the workplace and maintain a good environment. Most importantly, they ensure better teamwork, are self-aware, have greater self-control and those with these qualities should not be discouraged or excluded from anywhere.

It is no to surprise that we have been living our life apathetically. For far too long we have failed to recognize and understand people’s feelings. Let alone our own. This is mainly because in places they have failed to appreciate those with high EQ, but this should not be an issue to demean candidates anywhere anymore. Highly emotionally intelligent people have a knack for getting along with others. This makes it more likely that they can become leaders, set a good example to their peers which they can further try to emulate. And without holding any position, they are capable of influencing people.

Moreover, given that their understanding ability already makes their persona unique, but their skills to get along well become even more sought after. They have well-developed people skills that let them build relationships with a diverse range of people across many cultures and backgrounds which is an asset, especially in an increasingly globalized workplace. This thus increases the working memory and maintains a good environment.

Is Emotional Intelligence Important?

Absolutely! Emotional Intelligence is very important. Firstly, one must recognize how emotional intelligence impacts workplace interactions. Understanding that emotional intelligence is good for the self is a great way to go as it allows one to become self-aware and enhances self-management. Secondly, workplaces should be able to conduct workshops on communicating professionally and effectively in all situations. Ask their workers to look after themselves first, look after their own mental health because only then can they be able to perform better. The same goes for schools and the students. Teachers too should be able to identify emotional skills with their students and communicate thoroughly regarding that.

Most importantly, an individual, regardless of where they are, where they work or what they do, should acknowledge that their emotional skill is essential. They need to realize that only they themselves can handle the stress.

Daniel Goleman, a successful writer of the book “Emotional Intelligence: Why it matters more than IQ” has said, “people’s emotions are rarely put into words, far more often than they are expressed through other cues. The key to intuiting other feelings is the ability to read nonverbal channels, tone of voice, gestures, facial expressions, and the like.” This totally seems to hold true when we look out for people with high EQ. Those willing to enhance their EQ can also read several books written by Mr. Goleman. Hence, in order to make ourselves, our workplace, and in general, this world a better place, then it is better if we start from self. If we start working on the emotions and skills as such.
