Why Great Leaders Are Great Storytellers!

Do you know what a visionary leader and a compelling storyteller have in common?

Both have the power to ignite a spark from within a spark of passion, purpose, and action. Storytelling has been a distinct characteristic of humans dating back to different points in history, you may ask the books of Vedas, the Holy Bible, or any sacred books which have been carrying stories about ancient times in the form of sacred stories and writings. While it may be fictional or factual, storytelling has been used as a tool for knowledge sharing, entertaining, and educating. As humans, we tend to rely heavily on social interactions. We are constantly looking for the need to relate and to be understood. This is where storytelling comes into the picture. Storytelling has been an integral part of human existence which has allowed the development of culture and personal identity. Through stories and myths, cultural values and practices are remembered and passed along for generations. Stories help create a shared narrative where people can relate to one another and feel closer as a community. Hence, we tell stories to communicate and to socialize. We relate to these stories and we try to understand one another.

Leadership, on the other hand, is the ability to lead, influence and guide a group of individuals to a shared common goal.  Every leader has a vision. A leader without a vision is like traveling on a bus with no destination in mind going nowhere with no clear direction. Storytelling is not just a distinct human characteristic but stands out as a powerful tool especially for leaders. Exceptional leaders throughout history have used great storytelling ability in order to convey their vision and to deliver their message.

Storytelling and leadership intertwine with one another where the core of leadership encompasses a compelling vision. Leaders are often synonymous to visionary individuals. As leaders they should be able to portray their aspirations with clarity and certainty. When you have a certain goal to achieve in your mind, just laying it off directly is not going to create an impact. An impact is created when there is a good build up. When a leader gives more base as to why they came to a conclusion with their vision, it becomes sincere and feels more authentic. This is possible when it is said just like how a story unfolds. The gap between the leader and the audience is bridged as communication now feels more sincere. While talking about their goals and aspirations, leaders need to make their audience visualize in a sense that they will be able to visualize whatever the leader has been looking for. The leaders paint the picture, help the audience visualize it and take them along with the story.

Compelling storytelling makes people feel included, almost as if they are a part of the story. A well-crafted story can bring a leader’s vision to life. Stories engage emotions, which is critical for leadership. Leaders who share personal or meaningful stories create emotional bonds with their audience. This emotional engagement drives motivation, builds trust, and helps people connect with the leader’s vision on a deeper and a much more personal level. It further helps in building an emotional connection. This emotional bond plays an important role. It builds trust, motivates people to contribute, and fosters loyalty. When people feel emotionally invested in a vision, they are more likely to put in the effort and commitment required to make it a reality.

In today’s fast-paced world where people are constantly caught up in between the hustling and bustling of life, authentic communication has become more important. Therefore, people, and individuals tend to look for leaders who listen and are genuine and transparent. Storytelling acts like a ladder, a ladder to reach to the audience and connect with them on a deeper level. The secret to being a great leader is being an even greater storyteller.

So the next time you are looking to connect with your audience and build a good connection as the leader, switching to the power of a good story is the way to go!
