Media and Blog Writing: A New Dimension on Creative Writing

Writing is one of the major mediums to express feelings. Writing is the primary basis upon which one’s work, learning, and intellect will be judged- in college, in the workplace, and in the community. This helps us in fostering our abilities to explain and refine our ideas to others and ourselves. Glocal After School has always been dedicated to building skills in people. So the concept of teaching Media and blog writing to the writing enthusiast was an effective approach. Media and Blog Writing course actually proved to be the new dimension on Creative Writing.

It was a 5 days course and  a wonderful session for all the participants. The aim of this course was to enhance their writing skills. Mr. Kushal Pokharel, Columnist, The Rising Nepal was an amazing instructor of the course. This course helped the participants to write blogs and articles, media articles and techniques of writings covering the theoretical aspects of writing, its growing significance in the world and emerging trends among others.

Introduction to Media OPED and Blog

Mr. Pokharel introduced the term MEDIA OP-ED which is a piece of writing that expresses a personal opinion of the author, published in a newspaper opposite to the page on which editorial is written (Cambridge Dictionary). He added it is usually longer than a regular letter to the editor. (700-1200 words) in our context. He also explained that op-ed writing has a working significance as it is a Succinct and clear means of communication, which nurture a reading culture among students and improving their analytical writing skills and also Promote authentic and critical writing and reading skills that help students to excel in professional world influencing public opinion and shape practice.

He introduced Blog writing as a piece of writing that expresses your thoughts, experiences about any topic in a more informal way and also added some of its significance. In addition to this, he also gave really essential tips on writing to the participants. He also talked about the steps and challenges in both writings. Also, ABCD Rule was something interesting.

Creating a learning community where the ideas and skills learned can be executed in a proper manner. With that, the participants were asked to write their own articles and Mr. Pokharel would review that and send for publication. The course was not just learning, it was also a platform where the participant’s piece of writing was evaluated. In the end, feedbacks were provided with the assurance of their article to be published further.
